We’re biblical – we believe the Bible is God’s word.
We’re evangelical – we believe the gospel and proclaim it.
We’re reformed – we believe God is sovereign over all things.
As a Presbyterian Church, we also believe that the Westminster Confession of Faith is the best summary of what the Bible teaches.
Here are some of the key things we believe:
God
There’s one God who exists eternally in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
God is eternal – he has no beginning or end.
God is the creator of everything.
God is sovereign – everything happens according to his will.
God does everything for his glory.
God is perfectly righteous and holy.
God is infinitely worthy of all worship, praise, honour, and glory.
God is infinitely good, merciful, gracious, and loving.
Sin
Even though God made people in his image, to know him and love him, we’ve all rejected God and rebelled against him.
We’ve all turned away from God and want to rule our own lives.
We want nothing to do with God and we ourselves want to be God, and we make ourselves the centre of the universe.
We have a sinful nature and commit sins.
Our sin also renders us unable to come to God without him drawing us to himself.
Judgement
As a result of our sin and rebellion against God, we’re under his wrath and judgement, which we fully deserve.
God is perfectly righteous and just, and so he must punish every sin.
Unless God saves us, we will be eternally condemned.
Salvation
In his infinite goodness, mercy, and grace, God made a way for us to be saved from his judgement, and have eternal life with him.
He sent the Lord Jesus Christ to become a human being (through the virgin birth), to live a perfect life (the life we haven’t lived, but the life God requires), to die an atoning death in our place (taking the punishment we deserve), and to rise from the dead (conquering sin and death), in order to save us through faith in Jesus. This wonderful message is the gospel.
Trusting in the Lord Jesus alone is the only way we can be saved, and have eternal life with him.
God chooses who will be saved, and he enables us to repent and believe by regenerating us through the power of the Holy Spirit.
God saves us by his grace and keeps us by his grace. He enables us to endure to the end through the power of the Holy Spirit.
It’s impossible to lose our salvation, as Jesus loses no one the Father gives him. Nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Good Works
We do good works because we’ve been saved. We live in response to God’s grace.
As Christians, we desire to live holy and godly lives because we love God and we desire to obey him and please him.
Before we were saved, we were self-centred. But through the gospel of Christ and by the power of the Spirit, God changed us from being self-centred to being God-centred and others-centred.
So we love God and we love people.
And we serve God and we serve people.
Our ultimate motivation for everything we do is God’s glory.
Bible
The Bible is the inspired word of God.
The Bible is completely trustworthy and authoritative.
The Bible is our rule of faith and life.
The Bible is God’s revelation to us – it contains everything we need to know about God and his plan of redemption through the Lord Jesus Christ.
God speaks to us in and through his word, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
